The unavoidable truth is that the Left hates Christians.
There is a temptation to deescalate the significance of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Leaders have called for moderation, for an ease of political tension through relaxed, open dialogue. Celebrities are more than willing to publicly express their condolences over Kirk’s death without acknowledging that Kirk was specifically fighting for open dialogue. These calls for peace are not done in good faith but are ways to further silence any views lying contrary to their own.
But what are the views they want silenced? What so-called extremism was the young husband and father of two espousing?
The answer is, of course, his Christian faith.
Over the past few days, people have dredged up countless clips of Kirk debating with students on college campuses. He talks about preventing abortion, ending transgender ideology, and the value of free market capitalism. These issues are often distilled into “political problems” so that they can be dismissed. Many people don’t want to confront their significance, so they avoid them at all possible cost. These “political problems” aren’t allowed to come up at dinner, in conversations with friends, or at church. They are too uncomfortable for people to think about.
Christians need to get uncomfortable. Kirk’s defenses of said “political problems” didn’t come from a snooty infatuation with social philosophy; they were rooted in his faith. His Christian worldview led him to the truth: Life is precious and abortion is murder. God made two genders, male and female, and you cannot change the gender you were born as. We should use the various gifts God gives us to build a society that values what is good, honest, and beautiful.
Kirk’s Christian identity was not an addendum, it was the whole book.
In the Gospels, it is written that “Upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18).”
Christians know that their foundation rests in Christ alone. From there, they are able to know things to be right or wrong, are able to accept the complexities of life, and can truly rest in the peace which surpasses all human understanding.
Without that rock, without Christ, people fall apart. As societies slip into decadence, they become self obsessed, sensationalized, and perverted. There is a decline from morality into debauchery. This has run wild in the liberal vision of America.
Abortion is celebrated as a means of personal choice. Transgenderism is about affirming vulnerable peoples’ emotions. Socialists and communists want to gain profit for all, regardless of effort. Their lack of Christian faith leads them into a self-centered spiral that spins in an endless, angry loop.
Until something bad happens. Because another truth is that this spiral turns into anger, into outrage, and ultimately into violence.
There is a reason Christian schools and churches are frequently the targets of mass shootings. The Christian worldview is a check on the decadent behavior constantly promoted in public schools, on social media, and by the media. Hedonism can’t stand the humility of a God-fearing follower of Christ.
Kirk’s death has spurred an appalling amount of vitriol online. A viral malice has cropped up from teachers, medical professionals, and college students among others. They celebrate Kirk’s death because his willingness to talk about “political problems” was actually an attack on their Godless life. These worldly individuals have built their lives on affirmations and self expression. They see Kirk the same way they see all Christians: obstacles.
Matthew 16 doesn’t just talk about building the rock of Jesus. It also says that “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” A lot of people are very scared right now. Kirk’s death is evidence that being a Christian in America, a nation founded by men who believed wholeheartedly in Jesus, could be a threat to your life.
Yet, those people who are afraid, shouldn’t be intimidated by this. God will be their strength. They will use their faith to grow the Kingdom of heaven, so that they have no reason to fear evil or hedonism or liberal backlash. They have already won the battle when Christ died on the cross.
The gates of hell shall not prevail.
